Christian Service

Church of the Holy Spirit has a unique program which operates from a pantry in the church. Very few churches support a food program such as this and even fewer have the pantry in the church. Our parishioners generously contribute to Christian Service to assist Highland residents who are finding it difficult to make ends meet. Some experience temporary difficulties and others have a pension that doesn't meet even their most basic needs. Our food is purchased, using parishioner donations, from the Oakland County Food Bank. This stretches our dollars and helps us keep ample food on hand for balanced meals. Parishioners donate canned goods, grocery bags and their time to keep the program operating.

Regular hours are Monday and Wednesday from 2 until 5 pm. Other times are available by leaving a message at 887-1441. Calls are returned 7 days a week and an appointment given .

Two additional programs are available. FOCUS HOPE is a monthly food distribution for seniors over 60 with under $1100 a month income. The income limits change for each additional family member. Everyone on a steady income in this range should apply at the Christian Service Office. The food is excellent and is provided to us free of charge. We just provide the people to administer the program.

Holiday times are special. At Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas we provide extra food items and/or gifts to enhance the season for our clients. A back-to-school program is available to families who register. A Giving Tree is a tradition that provides gifts to our clients at Christmas.

Christian Service tries to provide referral services for all sorts of needs of our own parishioners as well as other residents of Highland. We can also give you the numbers of churches on our borders that provide services. We network with other agencies in Oakland County.

This church is a member of the Lakes Vicariate and the Archdiocese of Detroit . There are many issues of peace and justice around the world that are of interest to us: protection of life at every age beginning with conception, domestic abuse issues, political issues that affect the human condition such as a living wage, workers' rights, medical coverage for the poor and elderly, alcohol and substance abuse rehabilitation, and local needs at hospitals, jails, homeless shelters and nursing homes.
